Hosted by Iain and Lisa Thompson, the event started with a quick tour around the shop from Iain. We then retired to their cafe, where Iain told the group how Deli Shack came into existence.
After an excellent tutored tasting session, sampling delicious local food and wine, we handed over to Simon Wilkins of it’seeze. Simon talked to us about social media strategies and how to get the best out of the internet in terms of driving traffic to your business website. A really valuable overview.
Hosted by Simon Crow and the team at Dartmoor Whisky Distillery, the evening a kicked off with a presentation from Simon, who talked about their business journey and some of the highs and lows they’d encountered along the way. Unlike most start-ups this project has required massive investments to get off the ground. Crowdfunding being a major contributor to the kitty, it was interesting to gain an insight into this important financing stream.
After a delicious buffet provided by Jill of nearby King’s Kitchen, we handed over to Jo Evans of Figgy’s Christmas Puddings. Jo has been running her business successfully for over ten years, growing it slowly and carefully before making the leap to running it full-time. It was really interesting to hear how she believes she has found the right work-life balance that can elude many small business owners.
Co-hosted by Mary Quicke and Kate Shirazi of Cakeadoodledo, the event started with a farm tour. Mary told us all about the cheesemaking process and explained how they have grown the Quicke’s brand. Moving on to the Cakeadoodledo onsite cafe for a tutored cheese tasting and presentations from Mary and Kate, who will talk about their business journeys and some of the highs and lows they’ve encountered along the way.
